For the first time in 15 years, Pottstown Middle School made Adequate Yearly Progress two years in a row.

Not many years ago was my first year teaching elementary school. I had spent plenty of time living through corporate re-organizations and the mantra-of-the-month prior to entering a classroom, so I felt confident to immediately join the school improvement team who had just started reading Failure Is Not an Option®. After an especially energetic visit by Alan Blankstein, our team marched away fully inspired, but not exactly sure where to begin, only knowing that we all agreed that creating our own mission statement was an appropriate first step to define our changing staff and redefine our direction as a building. There are p lenty of ways to land on a mission statement, but it is a labor of love, pragmatism, and intention to create a statement that guides your mission; one simple enough to remember while broad enough to reflect upon in the face of challenging decisions yet to be encountered.
